The PROGNOSIS of SOFT TISSUE REPAIR By Dr. Michael S Kelsey, D.C., C.C.S.T. The definition of prognosis is to predict the chances/odds of recovery. Your ability to recover from an injury rests on many factors. The obvious ones are age, lifestyle (i.e. smoking, drinking), and genetics. The less obvious factors include being male or female, body position in the vehicle, seat-belt usage, airbags and head rest position. A major factor, not usually considered, is your physician. He/she has the responsibility of guiding you through the healing process. It is a surprise to many people to know that vehicle crash damage is not a predictor in whether the person is hurt. Many crashes with little damage to the vehicle have caused serious injuries. Also, other crashes where the vehicle was totaled produced little or no injury. Everyone has heard of car crashes where one person dies and another walks away. Researchers over the past 60 years have studied automobile crash types and the associated injuries. Using published research we can predict what percentage of patients will return to a pain free state. Some researchers say 3 out of 4 people will recover; others say only 1 out of 4 will return to a pain free state. It is safe to say that in combining all crash types you have an estimated 50/50 chance of recovering properly and becoming pain free. Those odds go up significantly if your physician is competently trained in caring for the special types of injuries people receive from auto crashes. Copyright 2013 Dr. Michael S.
